Since 2011, Edmonton’s Food Bank has enjoyed the relationship with Fort Edmonton Park. Each year “Gardener Bill” Hope-Hanson works with many volunteers and plants twenty six gardens. Buffalo Head Prairie School provided one of the team of volunteers.
This relationship, with Fort Edmonton Park and Edmonton’s Food Bank, began with a fun run, Plant a Row Grow a Row to Feed the City, sponsored by Edmonton’s Food Bank. Our goal was to deliver heritage garden seeds and seeds potatoes to Fort Edmonton to plant supporting the Food Bank. Little Potato Company, one of the sponsors of the event, donated seed potatoes. Food Bank is their charity of choice and all produce harvested goes directly to the Food Bank to add healthy options to food hampers.
Last summer, 2016, over 2000 KGS of produce (potatoes, squash, beans, cabbage) was harvested. City of Edmonton supports this seasonal initiative.
